Understanding the After Close Options

To better understand the After Close options in the Display Rules section of Depicter, it’s important to first know what a session in a browser means.

What is a Session?

A session in a browser is the period of time while you are actively using the browser—from the moment you open it until you close it. During a session, the browser can temporarily save things such as your login status, form data, or items in a shopping cart.

Examples:

  • If you log in to a website and keep the browser open, you’ll usually stay logged in during that session. But if you close the browser completely and reopen it, the session ends, and you may need to log in again.
  • In Incognito (private) mode, the session is even more temporary. As soon as you close the incognito window, all browsing history, cookies, and login information are deleted, as if it never happened.

In short, a session is like a temporary memory for your browsing activity that lasts only while the browser (or incognito window) stays open.

After Close Options

1. Never show again to the user

  • Once the popup is displayed and closed, it will not appear again, even if the page is refreshed.
  • If the user closes and reopens the same tab, it will still not show.
  • It will only appear again in a new browser session.

2. Show again on every visit

  • The popup will be displayed every time the user visits the target page.
  • It doesn’t matter if it’s within the same session or a new one—the popup will always reappear.

3. Show again after return

  • Once the popup is displayed and closed, it will not appear again if the page is simply refreshed.
  • However, if the user closes the tab and then reopens the page, the popup will be shown again. This action is considered a return.
  • The popup will also appear again in a new session.

4. Show again after a period

  • Once the popup is displayed and closed, it will not reappear until the time period you’ve set in this option has passed.
  • If a new session begins before that period ends, the popup will immediately be shown again.

This way, you can control exactly when and how often your popups are displayed to users, depending on their browsing behavior and session state.
